I saw a post on Facebook the other day from author Dayton Ward, saying that he had bought his tickets for the fortieth anniversary screening event for the first Star Trek feature film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I have been checking the websites for Fathom Events and my local Cinemark for the last several days, looking for ticket availability.
Today, Fathom Events has added the film to the calendar, with shows on September 15th & 18th. Tickets don’t go on sale until August 2nd.
Now, I have seen almost all of the Star Trek films in the theater. I have seen the first nine films on VHS, all of them on DVD, two of them on blu ray, and all three Kelvin films in IMAX. I was four seats away from Leonard Nimoy at the April premiere of the ’09 reboot at the Alamo Drafthouse – South Lamar and Peter Weller was in the Gateway Theater on Stonelake Blvd for Star Trek Into Darkness when I went to see them.
I’ve even seen Star Trek: The Next Generation ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ on a theater screen, edited together into one long episode, without the “To Be Continued…” after Riker said, “Fire.”
The first movie of the franchise I saw in the theater was Star Trek: Generations with my two sisters. And my sister & I went to see all four TNG films together.
I was at early premiere events for all three Kelvin films.
When Leonard Nimoy passed away, I attended a memorial double feature of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home at the Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson, Texas.
And last year, I went to see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – The Director’s Cut at the Cinemark in Lufkin.
So, yes, I will be going to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture when Fathom Events brings it back to the big screen. I’m hoping for a local showing, but I may go as far as Dallas/Fort Worth for it.
